Genome Length as an Evolutionary Self-adaptation

چکیده
There is increasing interest in evolutionary algorithms that have variable-length genomes and/or location independent genes. However, our understanding of such algorithms both theoretically and empirically is much less well developed than the more traditional xed-length, xed-location ones. Recent studies with VIV (VIrtual Virus), a variable length, GA-based computational model of viral evolution, have revealed several emergent phenomena of both biological and computational interest. One interesting and somewhat surprising result is that the length of individuals in the population self-adapts in direct response to the mutation rate applied, so the GA adaptively strikes the balance it needs to successfully solve the problem. Over a broad range of mutation rates, genome length tends to increase dramatically in the early phases of evolution, and then decrease to a level based on the mutation rate. The plateau genome length (i.e., the average length of individuals in the nal population) generally increases in response to an increase in the base mutation rate. Furthermore, the mutation operator rate and adapted length resulting in the best problem solving performance is about one mutation per individual. This is also the rate at which mutation generally occurs in biological systems, suggesting an optimal, or at least biologically plausible, balance of these operator rates. These results suggest that an important property of these algorithms is a considerable degree of self-adaptation.

Self-Adaptation in Evolutionary Algorithms
In this chapter, we will give an overview over self-adaptive methods in evolutionary algorithms. Self-adaptation in its purest meaning is a state-of-the-art method to adjust the setting of control parameters. It is called self-adaptive because the algorithm controls the setting of these parameters itself – embedding them into an individual’s genome and evolving them. We will start with a short ...
متن کاملStep Length Adaptation on Ridge Functions
Step length adaptation is central to evolutionary algorithms in real-valued search spaces. This paper contrasts several step length adaptation algorithms for evolution strategies on a family of ridge functions. The algorithms considered are cumulative step length adaptation, a variant of mutative self-adaptation, two-point adaptation, and hierarchically organized strategies. In all cases, analy...
متن کاملQualms Regarding the Optimality of Cumulative Path Length Control in CSA/CMA-Evolution Strategies
Cumulative step-size adaptation (CSA) based on path length control is regarded as a robust alternative to the standard mutative self-adaptation technique in evolution strategies (ES), guaranteeing an almost optimal control of the mutation operator. This paper shows that the underlying basic assumption in CSA--the perpendicularity of expected consecutive steps--does not necessarily guarantee opt...
متن کاملErratum to: The genome of the Antarctic-endemic copepod, Tigriopus kingsejongensis
Background The Antarctic intertidal zone is continuously subjected to extremely fluctuating biotic and abiotic stressors. The West Antarctic Peninsula is the most rapidly warming region on Earth. Organisms living in Antarctic intertidal pools are therefore interesting for research into evolutionary adaptation to extreme environments and the effects of climate change. Findings We report the wh...
متن کاملEvolutionary self-adaptation: a survey of operators and strategy parameters
The success of evolutionary search depends on adequate parameter settings. Ill conditioned strategy parameters decrease the success probabilities of genetic operators. Proper settings may change during the optimization process. The question arises if adequate settings can be found automatically during the optimization process. Evolution strategies gave an answer to the online parameter control ...
